Development of the landfill will eventually fill a total of 21.6 acres of emergent, scrub-shrub, and forested wetlands. To compensate for this loss of wetlands, LRI's Wetland Plan calls for the establishment of 65 acres of wetlands mitigation area. The 65 acres includes a combination of wetland creation, restoration, and enhancement. Landfill and wetland mitigation construction will also avoid 9.7 acres of existing wetland, which will be permanently preserved in the mitigation site and in the buffers around the landfill.

The Mitigation Plan calls for:

  • Restoration of forested wetlands on existing upland meadow pasture
  • Enhancement of agricultural emergent wetlands
  • Enhancement of emergent wetland pasture
  • Creation of forested wetlands
  • Creation of scrub-shrub wetlands
  • Creation of seasonal pools
  • Improvements of instream fish habitat
  • Construction of garter snake refuges
  • Preservation of existing upland and wetland forests
  • Enhancement and preservation of existing upland areas in the buffer
  • Planting native vegetation at the edges of the mitigation site
  • Installation of bird and bat boxes
  • Placement of dead and down woody debris
